Do you know the history behind the Bermuda Moongate?

Bermuda’s history is steeped in myth and legend. Some say the island’s bewitching appeal started with the Bermuda Triangle conspiracy, but the island’s lore does not stop there. Bermuda is an enchanted world all its own and is full of mysterious stories to entrance the curious. The legends of the island spin through every aspect of Bermuda’s heritage and culture, even its architecture. In fact, one of the most intriguing Bermudian architectural accents just so happens to have an island tale all its own: the Moongate.

The Moongate has become a timeless Bermudian architectural feature and a very elegant national symbol for the island. With a history as mystical as the island itself, the Moongate is said to be a symbol of good fortune and love. Legend claims that lovers who walk through holding hands will be blessed with eternal love and happiness, making this elegant arch an iconic background for newlywed pictures.

It is estimated that there are about 40 Moongates on island, but the very first one was built by a local sea captain back in 1860 who was inspired to do so after seeing them in a Chinese garden. He was so moved by the simplicity and grace of the structure, that when he returned to Bermuda he constructed one using local limestone.

While the historical roots of the Moongate draw from eastern origins, many westerners associate the Moongate with a similar structure called as Stargate, a circular structure thought to be an interstellar gateway. The Moongate’s similarities with the Stargate captivate island visitors all the more and further cultivates the mystical perception the rest of the world has on Bermuda. And why not?

Bermuda is more than just charming and beautiful. Bermuda is pure magic, and the island’s lore is as intriguing as its architecture is enchanting. So the next time you see one of the island’s gorgeous Moongates, smile. You are looking at one of the most beloved Bermudian architectural structures.
